Methanol, also known as hydroxymethane, wood alcohol, or wood spirits, is an organic compound and the simplest saturated monohydrate with the chemical formula CH3OH/CH4O. The molecular weight is 32.04 and the boiling point is 64.7 ºC. Methanol, also known as "wood alcohol" and "wood essence", originated from the fact that its main production method used to be extraction from wood vinegar (one of the products of wood dry distillation or cracking). Modern methanol is produced directly from an industrial process catalyzed by carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen. Methanol is light, highly volatile, colorless, flammable, and has a very similar odor to ethanol (a type of alcoholic beverage). But unlike ethanol, methanol is highly toxic and cannot be consumed. Usually used as a solvent, antifreeze, fuel, or ethanol modifier, it can also be used to produce biodiesel through ester exchange reactions
