Methyl acetate, also known as MeOAc, acetic acid methyl ester or methyl ethanoate, is a carboxylate esterwith the formula CH₃COOCH₃. It is a highly flammable liquid with a delightfully sweet fragrance, reminiscent of certain types of glues and nail polish removers. Methyl acetate finds occasional use as a solvent, with its weakly polar and lipophilicnature. Its sibling, ethyl acetate is, however, the more popular solvent choice due to its reduced toxicity and greater water solubility. Methyl acetate itself possesses a solubility of 25% in water at ambient conditions. When the temperature rises, its solubility significantly increases.
